Food Justice
In July 2021, the South Westminster neighborhood lost its last remaining supermarket. With survey data indicating up to 40% of neighborhood residents lack access to a vehicle, the loss of this supermarket left many in the community struggling to meet their basic food needs. Since then, we've seen food insecurity soar, from the end of SNAP emergency allotments in March 2023, to rapidly rising food costs, and now, even more cuts to publicly funded food assistance programs are underway.
The Food Justice Campaign is made up of dedicated community members and Growing Home participants passionate about bringing positive change to the level of food access in the community. These members set the priorities and the goals for the campaign and are responsible for executing every aspect of our strategy, from community education, surveying, research, and beyond.
The Campaign's primary focus right now is on implementing a local Community Fridge initiative. Want to know more or get involved? Check out the flyer below, or contact a member of the Connecting Community team for more information or to get involved!

Really nice staff and volunteers. They helped my family with food so we could have something on the table until I got paid. Thank you!
