Connecting Community

We believe thriving and equitable communities can exist when we tap into the resiliency and leadership of the participants with whom we work. We focus on connecting our participants to each other as well as to other community members, ally organizations, and local institutions. In this way, we create a foundation where everyone shares in the responsibility of solving community problems and creating sustainable outcomes for all.

Connecting Community

CVA exists to build collective power to advance the rights and interests of working class and oppressed people.

Food Justice

Our community garden is run by a group of dedicated community members.

How Does Growing Home Connect Community?

  • Community Organizing
    • Growing Home works with community members to develop their advocacy skills, identifies and trains neighborhood leaders, and supports participants as they leverage their collective power to address issues prioritized by the community.
  • Advocacy
    • Growing Home monitors legislation around issues identified by participants as important to them and advocates for system changes that enhance community resilience.
  • Training and Skill-Building
    • Growing Home trains participants on a variety of topics to enable them to more fully participate and lead on positive community growth. Topic areas include legal and government systems; nonprofit structure and development; mental wellness and interventions; advocacy and community organizing practice; issue-area topics such as affordable housing or food apartheid; practical life skills; anti-oppression, inclusivity, and equity work; etc.
  • Community-Based Projects
    • Over the years, Growing Home and its participants have developed community-based projects to meet the needs of our neighborhood. These include projects like our community garden, the Jardín de Fe y Esperanza, which is organized by community members and which leverages our volunteer base to supply Growing Home’s food pantry with fresh produce. Other projects are currently underway, and Growing Home engages with such projects as prioritized by our community.

I used to Volunteer weekly here, when I needed help, and it was my way of repaying for my monthly visits. Very clean, quality food, and lots of services. They don’t just hand out food to families. They help get you in touch with all the right agencies. Today, my visit was to donate from my pantry. I encourage all those who have excess. Things your family decided they don’t like. It might complete an evening meal for another family.
