Food Justice

The Food Justice Campaign is made up of dedicated community members passionate about bringing positive change to the level of food access in their community.

In July 2021, the South Westminster neighborhood lost its last remaining supermarket. With survey data indicating up to 40% of neighborhood residents lack access to a vehicle, the loss of this supermarket left many in the community struggling to meet their basic food needs. Frustrated with the revolving door of big-box superstores coming and going without regard to the impact on the local community, members of Growing Home’s participant base immediately mobilized to build this Food Justice Campaign.

The goals of the campaign are straightforward: community health and community wealth. Community members want to see all neighborhood residents able to access healthy, affordable, nutritious foods, and in so doing, utilize models that promote community wealth-building. Our community members set the priorities and the goals for the campaign and are responsible for executing every aspect of the campaign, from community education, surveying, research, and beyond.

Really nice staff and volunteers. They helped my family with food so we could have something on the table until I got paid. Thank you!
